Poetic Stylings of a 4 and 6 year old (and 28yo!)

Today we were working on rhyming words and looking at songs, ballads, poems and other rhyming words.  Our assignment was to make a short poem about Jesus, then about our family.

So I showed the girls how to brainstorm rhyming words.I told them I was going to write a poem about Jesus’ birth, so help me think of words.

I said day – Sierra said neigh

I said boy – Sierra said toy

I said Savior – Sierra said favor

 

So then I showed the girls how I took the rhyming words and made up a sentence with them on the end:

 

On Christmas Day

When the horse said neigh

Was born a baby boy.

He was shinier than a Christmas toy

For he was Jesus, our Savior

and we always want to be in His favor.

I figured I would do the ‘hard’ one about Jesus and explain to the girls how to write a poem (yes, I know they don’t have to rhyme… but they are only in K and 1st, we don’t need to get into a deep discussion on poetry – lol)

 

Sierra brainstormed words for her family poem… here are the ones she came up with

Karis – Paris, Mom – Bomb, Dad – glad.  And here is her poem:

 

One day we took Karis to Paris

And Mom blew a bomb

And Dad was so glad

that Mom blew a bomb!

And Ruby was looking for a word that rhymes with her name, so her poem ended up being:

 

Ruby went to the movie

I was CRACKING UP over Sierra’s poem, and thought Ruby did pretty well herself too! So I thought I’d share our poetic stylings ;P

Berry Picking and Jam

So it FINALLY wasn’t raining today and we took the girls to Chena Lakes to go berry picking.  We went looking for raspberries and two hours later we had enough for one thing of jam! LOL

The girls loved looking at all the different types of mushrooms, and wanted me to take pictures of all of them!

 

Dustin wore Maddie in the sling as my shoulders were hurting – and he’s carrying my pink water bottle – isn’t he sexy! At least I turned the sling around so the flowers weren’t showing. hehehe…

 

Two hours of picking later and we headed back to the car -  but not before we made sure we took one last picture of everyone picking a berry before we left!

Now we went back home to make the jam (my first time – but it was SOOOOO easy – just buy pectin and the directions are in the box!)

Now we spent about another 45 minutes picking the ‘ucky' pieces out and mashing them to see how many ‘mashed berries’ we had

I decided since we were going to make jam anyway, we might as well make strawberry jam too! So I bought a pound of strawberries at Safeway on the way home from picking berries.

JAM!!  We only ended up using half the strawberries I bought!  So this jam total cost us $3.50 (and about 3 hours of time).

Family Portraits

I sent all family members an email to the site with all the pics.  But here are the three that we ordered for our family portraits this year.  By the way, if you didn’t get an email and want one (to see all 50+ pics) just email me to let me know so I can give you the site and password.  But trust me, these are the only ones that all the girls are at least looking in the direction of the camera! LOL

 

 

Time is FLYING!

Truck is sold (hopefully it doesn’t fall through on Tues!), appointments made for wills, massage/pedicure (it was a MOTHER’S DAY gift that I have to cash in before Dustin leaves), bought a treadmill so I can exercise when the kids are in bed, and we are getting family pictures before Dustin leaves too.

Lesson planning as I got two huge boxes of homeschool stuff on Saturday.  SHEESH!! We will be starting in a few weeks!!!

Working with Ruby and reading – she can read some words already and we ‘read’ a book the other day. Cat, Rat, Cat ran, Rat ran, Rat sat on Cat, etc.

Going through the spelling lessons that Sierra will be doing.  This is her first year having spelling tests.  I was just explaining what we will be doing.  So I told her we’ll be having tests like, spell in, now pin, now spin, now fin… she got them all right.  Well, of course then she said – duh mom this is easy!!! I don’t need spelling tests.  So I said, it starts off easy, but try to spell believe!  She looked at me and said B-E… LIE…… V… E – is that right?  UM, okay, so maybe you DON’T need spelling tests! LOL! Too bad – she’s getting them anyway!

Going through curriculum upon curriculum!!! Need to order a few more things and then I think we’re good until the spring!

BUSY BUSY BUSY!!!  Dustin is off the next two weeks so we’re going to cram EVERYTHING that needs to be done before he leaves in that time frame.  And then we are tentatively going to start school on the 24th.

Been busy

Dustin leaves in 5 weeks, so we’ve been busy getting all the shtuff together.  Trying to sell the truck, get the wills in order, and all the paperwork that goes with a deployment!

And today it is so smokey they recommended not going outside – great – my kids LIVE outside – LOL!

The girls finished their summer reading program and each got a free book from the library – so they were excited about that.  And Maddie is EVERYWHERE rolling and scooting. We keep calling her turtle because she sticks her head out like a little turtle!

 

Oh! And can you believe its almost AUGUST!!! SHEESH!! Where has this year gone!

After awhile we figured it was safer to just take the hooks off and let them practice casting!  Ruby was really good at it! We didn’t catch anything of course, they didn’t have the patience to actually sit and wait for a fish to bite, they kept reeling it in to recast.
